There may well be times when you need to get a shoe off your horse quicly and a farrier is not going to be on hand soon enough. In those instances we recommend that all horse owners learn how to remove a shoe should the need arise. If you follow the instructions will have no trouble removing the shoe quickly and painlessly if you need to.
Only 2 tools are required. Nail Pullers and a pair of Pincers
Step 1. Place the nail pullers inside the fuller of the shoe and grip the nail.
Step 2. Push the nail pullers away from you and the nail will pull out.
Step 3. Grab the nail with the pincers and pull it the rest of the way out.
Step 4. Repeat the previous steps for each nail and the shoe will drop off.
If the horse is lame wrap the foot in cotton wool and elastoplast until your vet or farrier can attend. This will protect the hoof as well as keep it clean.
