Saint Eligius should really be known as the patron saint of racing given the areas of the industry that are part of his patronage. Namely, blacksmiths, farrier's, horses, jockeys, saddlers, sick horses and veterinarians. He was ordained in 640AD. It was said that you could easily find his house by the number of poor that he was caring for there. His remembrance day is December 1. Whether you are catholic or not, it interesting to know that there is a saint looking out for the well being of farriers and blacksmiths.
